As part of our Community Outreach Program, Dr. Gregory G. Pendell recently conducted an asthma training seminar for all Chesapeake Public Schools K-12 nurses.

We are thrilled to be able to provide this important training as we know it ultimately helps children and their parents.

A majority of the training focused on Exercise-Induced Asthma, which 80 – 90 percent of asthmatics suffer from. Also, 10 percent of the U.S. population without asthma suffers from exercise-induced symptoms.

“Training like this is important because the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of asthma improves each year due to better studies, research and medical science,” says Dr. Pendell. “Operating from dated information can be harmful.”

The seminar covered:

• How to recognize Exercise Induced Asthma and what to do.
• Activities that put student-athletes at greater risk for developing asthma.
• Approximately 70% of asthmatics suffer from allergies.
• Treating allergies results in improved asthma control.
• Albuterol may become weight-based because of our child obesity problem.
• The consequences of overusing or abusing Albuterol.
• The proper way to use inhalers, aerochambers, and peak-flow meters.
• Children with asthma can play sports and compete just like anyone else.
• The difference between being out of shape and exercise-induced asthma.
• Why asthma is often over-diagnosed in obese children.
• The importance of recognizing conditions that can mimic exercise-induced asthma.
• Up-to-date treatment and prevention information.

In 2011 Allergy & Asthma Specialists provided the same training to Virginia Beach Public Schools K-12 nurses and PE Teachers.

“There are many myths and outdated methods in regards to identifying and treating asthma,” says Dr. Pendell. “That’s one of the reasons asthma is the third highest cause of hospitalization for kids under age 15; that’s why 185 children died from asthma in the U.S. in 2009; and that’s why asthma is the number one chronic disease causing school absenteeism. The aim of our Community Outreach Program is to correct that. Just one child lost to asthma is heart-wrenching.”
